Ted Whitehead

Hillingdon AC are sad to report the death of Ted Whitehead on Thursday 22 December 2011, aged 81.

He joined Finchley Harriers, now Hillingdon Athletic Club, in July 1949 and was a very promising endurance runner, making the senior Middlesex cross country team. He was first scorer for Finchley in the 1955 National, becoming cross country captain where he proved a great motivator with tremendous enthusiasm, always leading by example.

His running career came to an abrupt halt in December 1955 after his Lambretta skidded on an oil patch and crashed, leaving Ted with a permanently damaged leg.

But this sad event did not deter him from carrying on helping both Club and County for the remainder of his life, serving both as Secretary and President, amongst other official roles, as well as reaching international level as a timekeeper.

His unique character will be much missed and our thoughts and best wishes go out to his family at this sad time.

2012 London marathon club places

Following a new procedure this year which required Club members to formally apply for one of the four Club places for the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 22 April 2012, a panel of three senior Club officials met recently to discuss the merits of each applicant and allocate the Club places accordingly.

What quickly became evident during this discussion was that the key question asked was “What do you do for Hillingdon AC?”.

As well as training and competing, the panel were looking for applicants to have helped in some way in the running of Hillingdon AC during the previous 12 month period and these Club places are now being allocated as a reward for this. We are a club that depends solely on volunteers to help us function and, were we to rely only on members that no longer trained or competed, we would probably either cease to exist or no longer function as effectively as at the moment.

Therefore the recipients of the 2012 Hillingdon AC Club places for the 2012 Virgin London Marathon are:

Bumper Met League turn out

A record turnout of 44 Hillingdon athletes in the men’s race saw the A team finish fifth on the day behind Woodford Green, Serpentine, Highgate and London Heathside. As a result, the A team have now slipped to fifth in Division 1 overall, just 50 points behind London Heathside in fourth.

The ladies had 10 finishers, also a record for this home fixture. The strong finish saw them finish 4th team and creep up to 6th in the division 2 standings. The vets were well represented and finished 2nd in the second division.

HAC top junior in the 3km under 13 boys race was Sebastian Mills who came 19th in 12:06mins. In the equivalent girls race Hannah Nordstrum took 21st position with 14:29mins.   In the joint under 15 and 17 women’s race Christina Hall ran 16:47 for 4km and meanwhile in the corresponding junior men’s race U15 Sam Lloyd impressed with 14:05mins and 13th position in among boys in the U17 category. All the Hillingdon AC teams competed well against high class competition in one the highest mass participation sporting fixtures in Hillingdon Borough.

SIMPLY THE BEST

On behalf of Hillingdon AC, Gavin Collett would like to thank everyone who helped make the London City Runner Metropolitan League fixture at Ruislip on Saturday such a success.

The week leading up to the race had been fairly traumatic with the ramifications of a coroner’s report being released from a fatal accident at another cross country fixture earlier in the year. It sometimes felt like the eyes of a nation were on us as we promoted the first cross country fixture after the report.

But the magnificent members and friends of Hillingdon AC came up trumps and promoted an incident-free fixture on what is regarded as one of the best courses around, a good old fashioned traditional cross country.

I will not name names for fear of forgetting someone, but you know who you are.

The course preparers, the officials, the marshals, the first aiders, the clubhouse staff and anybody else who knows me, you were brilliant!

Thank you

Bedford Half Marathon & Lee Valley Indoor Meeting 11th December 2011

5 Hillingdon men travelled out to rural Wootton, near Bedford on Sunday to compete in the Bedford half marathon reports Martin Bateman. The forecast was for cold, wind and rain, but thankfully the latter never materialised to dampen the spirits of the 1500+ finishers. Ultra distance runner, Sam Blanshard (SM) made use of his recent training in Gerry Archer’s group to run a PB of 1:17.03 on a very undulating and windy course and finished fast to take 24th place. Paul Cuddihy (V35), unfortunatley had an off day and couldn’t hit his usual high standards and finished 32nd with 1:18.37. I (v35), in my first race at this distance for over a decade, was content with 35th and running a marker time of 1:18.44 PB. I don’t personally know how our other competitors, Gary Taylor V45 and Bill Harding V50 raced but they finished 632nd with 1:45.13 and 693rd with 1:46.56 respectively.

Full results here.

A trio of our younger athletes competed in the Metaswitch Indoor open meeting at Lee Valley. Results here. If anyone would like to contribute a report please send it to me.
