On Saturday 28th January 2012 11 HAC athletes competed in The SEAA XC champs reports Martin Bateman.
Stamner Park on a South Downs hill outside Brighton was the venue and it provided a real test of strength and stamina over steep, but thankfully for a change in January, dry course for good fun racing. I would liken the course to our Ruislip course but on a much bigger scale. In the senior men’s race which was 1 short lap of about a kilometre plus 3 just under 5K each there was only a short section of flat terrain to relax a little before muscle burning big ascents and joint shaking descents on hard chalky earth.
Hopefully the SEAA will choose to return there in a few years because those that didn’t compete missed out on a good event and HAC was well down as a club based on the talent and numbers we have to offer. Well done to all our competitiors who can say they conquered Stanmer Park.

Matt Fayers added the Welsh U20m indoor 800m title to his recent haul on Saturday. He isn’t Welsh and no doubt took pleasure in a tidy performance of 1:55.30 over what the principality had to offer as competition. Results here.
Quite a few of HAC’s athletes also competed very well on days 2 & 3 of the SEAA Indoor champs at Lee Valley athletics centre. Results here. Videos can be seen here.

The first race in the 2012 Enfield League series was completed by 3 HAC walkers on Saturday 21st January. Congratulations to Fabian Deuter on his 3rd place – a strong walk! Andy Cox (10th) and Ken Bobbett(17th) completed the team. The very windy conditions ruled out any chances of good times. 49 started the race; this gives a good indication that race walking is in reasonably good shape at the start of 2012 reports Andy Cox. Results here.

The indoor track & field season is in full swing but it won’t be long until the opportunity returns to compete for HAC in outdoor T&F events again.
Below is the most up to date list of club T&F fixtures for 2012 we have. The fixture calendar will be updated in the coming weeks.
Hopefully the club will see fit to make sure each of our teams have a home fixture at all costs!

A solid turnout at Trent Park for the fourth Metropolitan League fixture of the season saw the Men’s A team finish fifth on the day behind Woodford Green, Serpentine, Highgate and London Heathside reports Paul Leppard
This means that with one fixture remaining the A team should finish at least fifth in Division 1 overall as we now have a 460 point gap between ourselves and Serpentine’s B team in sixth, although the task of potentially finishing fourth has now become a lot tougher, as London Heathside took full advantage of their closest fixture to put out a strong team and increase their lead over us in the league table to 258 points.

Matt Fayers won the South of England Under 20 800m final at Lee Valley indoor arena on Sunday 15th January 2012. There was always pressure to perform as Matt’s improvements are now well noted and acknowledge reports Stefan Dokic.
Two and a half hours earlier Matt had to win his heat to automatically qualify. He did this in 1.58 with a 100m kick to pass his challenger. Having noted the opposition Matt didn’t want a slow race so the tactics were clear in his mind.
As soon as the gun went off Matt went to the front and led the pack through 200m in a low 28 sec. Having settled Matt let the others jostle for pole position. With the lead changing Matt tucked in the pack at 600m. With the pace increasing local rival Ben Waterman of ESM took the lead. At 150m to go Ben picked up the pace to create a gap but Matt responded immediately. In pursuit of Ben’s burst Matt closed the gap and at 50m went on his shoulder. Matt’s noted finish was evident as he edged Ben in an exciting finish of 1.55.1 to 1.55.6.

Matt travels next to Cardiff for the Welsh Championships at the end of the month. In a straight race it’s going to be a fast race with a confident Matt as one of the favourites.
Hillingdon AC had a number of other competitors at these champs. If anyone would like to send me a report please do so.

Another excellent turnout at the Middlesex Cross Country Championships saw the Senior Men finish third team and the Under 20 team finish second team reports Paul Leppard.
In the Senior event, Highgate dominated the race as they finished their scoring six in the first fifteen for 52 points but the battle for second place was really tight with Harrow just pipping us to second place by one point; scoring 131 to our points total of 132. Robert Thompson was again first scorer for the club in ninth place with Martin Bateman 18th, Daniel Thompson 21st, Sam Blanshard 22nd, Dean Clark 23rd and Anupam Das 38th making up the scoring six.
The strength in depth of the team was again really impressive as we put out the highest number of competing athletes in the mens race (28) with only Highgate putting out a stronger scoring 12.
In the Under 20 race, Carl Yates finished third to lead the Under 20 men to silver medals in the team competition, scoring 25 points to finish behind Ealing Southall & Middlesex (15 points) and in front of Harrow (30 points). Joe Carton finished seventh and Luke Pierre Inkson 15th to complete the team.
Middlesex Cross Country Championships Senior women’s race, by Lesley Conway
The senior women’s race, a much smaller affair then the men’s, was well contested at the head with three leaders jostling for first place until about the last quarter of the second lap before eventual winner Kate Brown of Loughborough University kicked in and kept ahead by ten seconds of her rivals from Highgate and Harrow. Highgate were clearly the gold medal team followed by Harrow and Thames Valley Harriers with equal points. In the field of 67, Hillingdon’s red stripe was sported by just two: Kate Verber, in her third cross country event for the club, and Pauline Fischer; both maintained good pace and finished 43rd (in 42 mins 13 secs) and 47th (in 43:25) respectively.

Juniors report required.

The unseasonably fine weather brought the masses and classes plus pets and toys out on Monday to pack out Ruislip Lido and create a guesstimate of 200+ obstacles per 1.6 mile lap for the runners of the Lido relays. The team of Robert Thompson and John Bignell came through the mayhem to claim the fastest team placing out of 26 teams.
A big thanks should go to Harry Wild for stepping in (again) and organising the event at the last minute along with Lesley Lavers plus the officials who also stepped in to make sure the event took part.
Time keepers: Christine Roy & Jim Leith. Numbers & positions: Jackie Butler & Lesley Lavers. Results: Jim & Lesley. Marshalls: Bernie Houchin, Gary Lavers & John Myall.
