Fayers justifies his Hillingdon Borough Athlete of the Year award

Matt Fayers put his recent speed training to the test by winning London Indoor Open Championship 800m race in 1:50.42 reports Stevan Dokic.
Matt’s A race on Sunday 27th January at Lee Valley put him amongst some rivals who, with faster times, had edged him in races before. This race was right for Matt with quality athletes taking it out from the start. All Matt had to do was sit in  behind the front pack. At 200m to go the bell rang for the last lap Matt was in 4th place. The race was on and Matt edged his way onto the leaders shoulder and with 75m to go his classic sprint kick was on to put him into the lead. His only mistake was to ease for the line and win. Matt is training 2/3 years ahead of his time and the next few months will prove this. Earlier in the week Matt had been awarded Hillingdon Borough’s Mayor’s Cup for Sports Person of the Year.

Also racing was Chris Ingram who continued his season with a slight improvement of his indoor PB with 2:04.23. Chris is determined to break the 2.00 minute mark for the 800 this summer and his training will do this for him.

Results here.

Opportunity to contribute to your club!

Andy Cox and his co race walkers have hired Minet Park cycle track for an event on Sunday 1st September 2013 from 1pm reports Dave Smith. As their race will only take one hour this has presented an opportunity for a willing club member to stage a race. The venue will be available from 2pm and the organiser can determine the distance the race will be run over. The timing for this is excellent as it fits in well with the start of the relay races that preceed the Winter season.

If you are interested please contact Dave Smith davidalan.smith2@gmail.com or Andy Cox andycox52@hotmail.com

At a cold and boggy Horsenden Hill a sizeable HAC contingent competed in the ATW Met League.

In the U13 boys races there was a positive turnout with 11 finishers from 47 with Zarir Zahir U11 our top finisher in 3rd place. The team finished 6th of 14 teams.

In the corresponding U13 girls race Anna Gizzi U13 was first of our 7 finishers in 11th place. The team finished 7th of 13 teams.

Disappointingly the U17 women’s race was again poorly contested with only 35 finishers overall with 3 from HAC. Chelsea Pledge was our highest placed in 28th. The team finished 12th from 14 teams.

There was a slightly better turnout in the U17 means race with 50 finishers. HAC had a strong presence in the contest with Sam Lloyd the first of 14 to cross the finish in 10th. The team finished an A and B team in 5th and 8th.

In the women’s race we had 9 finishers from 139 which isn’t great but has become the norm it seems. U20 Hannah Wells was our first home in 41st and picked up a prize as second overall U20. An inspiration to those competing and should be to those not was the evergreen V70 Angela Duncan who was the oldest finisher at the fixture. The team came 6th from 9 teams in division 2 and 3rd in the veteran div 2.

Rob Thompson led home the 26 HAC men in the 350 strong race in 12th place. As a local fixture 26 should really have been 36 at the very least. I hope all those men that run in the woods on a Sunday morning will show their face on a Saturday afternoon at the final fixture in RUISLIP WOODS on 9th February. The team came 5th from 10 in Division 1 and 6th from 9 in the veteran div1.

Results are here.

Video clip of Men’s race by Chris Ingram is here.

Crystal Palace Capers

Saturday 12th January was a big day for the u11’s Sportshall team reports Diane Gibbons.

It was their first trip to Crystal Palace to take part representing West London in the U11’S Fun in Sport Festival. The competition started at 12:30 and there was 10 teams taking part (double the amount from last year!)Both boys and girls worked tremendously hard, ran as fast as they could and it was great to see them support each other and become a team !.Unfortunately we were up against some very strong teams especially from Central London Hackney Hornets and Newham but we think our teams did really well – the boys finished 6th and the girls finished 8th. Results here.

Thanks must go to all the coaches, our officials for the day (Alan and Suzanne AND Celine) and all the amazing support from the parents who cheered the loudest!!!! Photos to follow….

We are now looking forward to the u13/15 competition at Crystal Palace on the 10th February.

Golden Years

Matt Fayers golden performance leaves him running for the indoors reports Stevan Dokic.
Matts Junior G B x/c debut at the Edinburgh International on Saturday 5th January 2013 was his last x/c race this season. He now heads indoors to keep his speed and pace up for the summer track season. Matt was never thought of as a candidate for x/c racing at the top level. His improvement over the years has been noted by UKA. Even at the Edinburgh race he was ranked just in the top 20 yet finished 10th. He was 3rd G B athlete and just over 30 seconds behind the leader. Matts name seems to be just under the spotlight and the live T V only showed him at the back of the leading pack. The results only showed the top 8 with 2 G B athletes yet it would have been better to show 3 G B athletes in the top 10 ! Matt being 10th. Results here.

ATW Met League 12th January 2013

The fourth Met League XC fixture is this Saturday at Horsenden Hill, Perivale. It is nice and local so not too far to travel. All club members are welcome and encouraged to compete as part of the club team. All standards welcome. You just need to turn up in good time for your race. Timetable and location details here. It would be really good to see some new faces put their training to use, especially those from our massive group of juniors. Competition gives training a purpose and goals to aim for. Training becomes  just a  keep fit excerise without competition!

Middlesex Cross Country Championships, Wormwood Scrubs 05 January 2013

Hillingdon AC’s Senior Men’s team won the Middlesex Cross Country Championships for the first time since 1971 to get 2013 off to a fantastic start for the club.

Robert Thompson was first scorer, finishing second behind race winner Chris Smith of TVH and he was followed by James Laing (7th), Anupam Das (10th), Daniel Thompson (14th), Martin Bateman (18th) and Richard Mann (31st) as Hillingdon AC won the six to score competition with 82 points to Highgate Harriers 106 points with TVH in third with 143.

Such was the margin of victory that the next three scorers for the club – Ed Campbell (35th), James Manley (48th) or Tom Hall (53rd) could all have figured as the sixth scorer and the team would have still been crowned as County Champions.

Best result for the Hillingdon women at the Middlesex Cross Country Championships was Hannah Wells’s fourth place in the under-20s five-kilometre race, missing out on a medal by 15 seconds, and Heather Gibbons’s ninth place. Reports Lesley Conway

The Hillingdon senior women could not match the success of the men due to low numbers and overall strength, but nonetheless entered one four-to-score team for their 8 kilometre race, and finished up tenth, led by Beth Young (22nd), followed by Lesley Conway (60th), Lucy Duncan (80th) and Angela Duncan (93rd). Unsurprisingly, Highgate emerged the winners with high placings (2nd,3rd,5th,16th) with London Heathside (4th, 6th, 9th, 19th) the runners-up by 12 points.

Full results may be found here.
