Gosunder Handicap Results

The Gosunder, Sat. 18 July 2015.
There was another sharp turn in the glorious 60-year history of the Gosunder Handicap race this year, writes Doug Milsom. In fact, there were several sharp turns, thanks to Martin’s ingenious and, in some people’s view (not mine, of course!) rather sadistic, hilly course in Mad Bess Wood. For the past 3 years, it had been incorporated in the June 5k Training Race, owing to the increasing dangers of Breakspear Road on our 5-mile road lap. This year, the main danger was sudden altitude sickness on the long climb in the woods!
21 runners took part, and the consensus was that this was a very successful change, partly due to the near perfect conditions in the woods. Thanks to a slightly generous handicap from Martin, your reporter won the coveted trophy by a margin of 26 seconds from a very fast finishing James Laing, who started some 23 minutes behind him. The fastest times for the 5.1 mile 2-lap course were James in 30:02, Rob Thompson in 30:52 and Ed Campbell in 31:51. The first lady home was Zoe Dobbs (5th) and the fastest lady Eva Mack in 37:13. I understand that John Bignell missed his start time, which accounts for his apparently slow time.
Thanks go to Martin and his team for organising and marking the course, the judges and timekeepers, and the marshals who kept most of us on the course and gave much needed encouragement.

Windsor Great Park Dash 10km

This race was a regular in the summer series when I first joined Hillingdon AC, writes Dave Smith. It was known then as the Datchet Dash, then became the Dorney Dash, until its new incarnation in the Great Park  for the first time in 2012. Back there this year for the second time I couldn’t resist entering, so that I had run the race on all three courses. I wasn’t dissapointed, with the race being run over a challenging but picturesque course. The 351 finishers were rewarded for their efforts on the final stretch with a stunning view as they came down off the monument and were able to look along the long avenue to the castle. Paul Hull finished 5th ( 4th Male) in 40:55. Dave Smith finished 25th in 44:28. Although it was fifteen years ago that I first came across the Datchet Dash I am glad to say that I remain competitive finishing 2nd V50. I will be back next year.

Adam tipped for the top

Adam Ireland put another record on his list by racing the Junior 2K Pitshanger park run and getting the course record of 7.06 by 1 second on a twisting course, This was the park run headlines reports Stevan Dokic.

What a lovely, lovely morning it was for Pitshanger junior parkrun’s 40th instalment. After some light overnight rain, the sun well and truly got his hat on and, to make things even better, the huge pothole by the entrance to the carpark had been filled over the past week. How could the day get even better???

Well, it certainly did for Adam IRELAND. Last week’s first finisher (on his first run with us) had been just 4 seconds off the course record. On his return this week, and accompanied by some vital encouragement from his coach from Hillingdon Athletic Club, Adam seared round the course to beat the record by just one second (registering 7.06). The record had stood since event number 2 when Michael MORAN set the bar on a cool October morning in his only run with us. Here’s a snap of 11yr old Adam with 200m to go.

HAC Ladies continue to climb higher at Spire 10K

When two ladies from Dacoram AC finished 4th and 8th, and two Chiltern Harriers crossed the line in 3rd and 9th positions they all looked expectantly at the splendid shield for the top ladies team whilst they eagerly awaited one further team mate to join them. How the faces changed from smiles to despondency as the wave of red and white vests swarmed over the line and swamped the finish area to their dismay! Another strong run by Lynn Hyde to finished 7th lady in 45.31 and fellow marathon runner Melanie Spencer, 11th in 47.19, were chased home by the fast improving Karen O’Rourke , 12th lady in 47.44 and ensured the trophy will reside at the HAC clubhouse for the next year! With Zoe Dobbs (48.26,17th), new star Paula Jones (49.07,21st) , Lucy Duncan (51.41, 33rd) , Amanda Kersen (58.36) and the evergreen Angela Duncan (1.02.42) keeping the opposition at bay the day was looking good for the ladies who are making a habit of being top ladies team having won the Concorde 5 a few weeks earlier!!

Not to be totally outdone the men finished in a respectable 2nd place, having won it last year, with debutant Matt Zalewski living up to his promise in training finishing 3rd overall in 36.16. Paul Hull (12th overall in 38.59) and Dave Smith (32nd in 41.46) completed the scoring trio. Also supporting and running well were Steve O’Keefe (39th, 42.27), Andy Torrance (84th, 46.24) , Tony Shaw (119th , 48.55) and Summer Series leader Dennis Carey (120th, 48.55).

Individual awards were won by Matt Zalewski 3rd overall, Lynn Hyde 1st FV40 and Angela Duncan, 1st FV70. Karen O’Rourke narrowly missed out by being 2nd FV50 lady by just over a minute. There were 415 finishers at the race which has proved a happy hunting ground for HAC having won several awards there last year. The course was reversed from last year and the organisers somehow managed to find a mountain in a park somewhere in Bushey which they kindly included in this otherwise pleasant road and trail run!!!
