Matt Fayers achieved one of his dreams of becoming a National Champion reports Stevan Dokic. The 17 yr old went into the final of the Aviva England u/20 indoor national 1500m at the NIA in Birmingham as one of the potential medallists. With some quality athletes up for challenging for medals the tactics were clear. With 12 athletes on the start line Matt had to let the pack settle down in the first 400m yet monitoring any early breaks. Irishman Fitzsimmons led the pack out followed by favorite Purnell with Carrol in close call. Matt moved up the field to the back of the leading pack then tucking into 2nd. As the pace increased after 800m the pack started to spread out. Purnell took a clear lead at 900 with a burst. The race was on with Matt in hot pursuit followed by in form Carrol. At 200m to go Matt tried to go on Purnell’s shoulder. It was now a sprint with no quarter given. The final bend saw Matt race wide in a final attempt to out sprint Purnell. At 20m to go the recent training paid off he took the lead. Purnell body language told all and Fayers pipped him at the line to take the title and a indoor Personal Best of 3:53.20. Results here.
There was more icing on the cake as Matt returned to the clubs presentation night. A warm applause for Matt as President Claire Tompsett read out his grade 1 senior men’s achievements in 2011. For this he received a year’s free membership, free club vest and gift tokens from Athletic advisor Paul Cuddihy.

ECCA Championships, Parliament Hill Fields, Saturday 25th February, 2012.
What better way of spending a bright, sunny Saturday in February could there be than running over Hampstead Heath? Hillingdon were represented by 13 athletes in the National, one Junior (U20) and 12 Seniors and Vets. Both races were held over two laps, with the course extending into the northern reaches by Kenwood. A tough, hilly course with mainly firm ground plus some very gloopy patches reports Doug Milsom.

On Sunday, 22nd July 2012, the weekend before the London Olympics open, Shapwick in Dorset is hosting a Charles Bennett Olympic Mile Race Day in honour of our local hero. Charles Bennett was the first Brit ever to win an Olympic Gold Medal in track and field. He won the 1500m, the GB team 5000m and won silver for the 4000m steeple-chase at the Paris Olympics in 1900. He was born in Shapwick and nick-named “The Shapwick Express” as he was a train driver on the Bournemouth to Waterloo line. He was a member of The Finchley Harriers.
Our day of celebration will consist of a series of mile races around Shapwick and is open to all ages and abilities. There will be a Village race, a Paralympic Mile, Elite races and an Open race for the general public.

A clutch of HAC athletes took part in the Wokingham Half Marathon on Sunday 19th Feb 2012 reports Martin Bateman.
The event is fairly low key but attracts many very good competitors and is fast and almost flat which helps to draw the crowds.
The day was fresh in the breeze but once on the move the temperature was ideal and only the breeze tempered the possibility of slightly faster times, not that it stopped Phil Wicks of Belgrave Harriers running a course record 63:14 on his own on the quite rural lanes.
I was our closest challenger, however my pb time of 74:42 and 45th is very modest in comparison. Dan Thompson ran through the pain barrier to record in his first HM 76:28 (55th) having done very few long runs prior to the race due to multiple injuries and niggles. PauL Hull V45, also had a memorable race also clocking a pb as a vet with 79:27 and 85th overall and 4th V45M. Dave Smith V45 completed the team having done very little training for this race in 408th and a creditable 93:45.
This is definitely an event I would recommend doing. Results here.
I see that Andrew Malyan V45 competed in the Brighton Half and ran 90:21 for 226nd place. Results here.

On Saturday 11th February, HAC junior coaches took a team of Under 13’s consisting of 12 boys and 12 girls to represent West London at the Aviva Sportshall London Regional Finals which was held at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
This was the first time the club has taken part in this event and on top of this we only had about 6 weeks of training. During this period, both teams trained very hard and there were several new club athletes in the team. Despite the short preparation both teams finished 2nd overall and the boys were only four points away from the national finals at Birmingham.
There was great team support throughout the whole day and the atmosphere inside was electric, you definitely knew where the Hillingdon AC team were sitting. It was fantastic to see so many parents supporting the club and we hope to see you all during the summer track season.

The Ladies senior and vets teams were complete and their performance edged them up to finish in 5th place in division 2. New comer Donna Nash was 3rd scorer behind Emma Grant and Hannah Wells. Pauline Fischer and Lucy Duncan completed the senior team and Angela Duncan made it a family affair completing the vets team who finished 8th over all.
Our U13 boys finished 7th in the league with the U13 girls team matching them. Our U17 boys did well on the day to finish first team but were 2nd team over all. The U17 ladies were 10th with the men’s team 5th on the day and in the first division as a whole. Our Vet men were 4th in the top division.

Roy Cnudde went well clear of his nearest rivals to win the Middlesex men’s 70+ race in a time of 40.24 reports David Smith. Second was Mick Miller in 45.09 and Doug Milsom third in 45.45. Another notable performance was a second place in the men’s 60-69 race for John Myall with a time of 36.01. Simon Claridge in 20TH (31.43), Dave Newman 22ND (32.20) and Steve Hirons 23rd (32.23) took silver in the men’s 50+ category. The men’s 40-49 team just missed out on third place, and may well have got a second place, if injuries hadn’t kept one or two regulars out. Paul Hull was Hillingdon AC’s first finisher in 12th place (30.29). Jo Miles took silver in the women’s 55-64 race in 47.29. On a bitterly cold day only a few brave souls ditched their Helly Hansens in favour of just wearing a club vest. Coming on the back of a very cold spell the course was firm underfoot with a few muddy areas.
