Serpentine 5K 29th March 2013

A small squad of HAC athletes went to town and dominated the Serpentine Last Friday 5K  in Hyde Park on Good Friday. The day was cold and breezy, but at least the sun showed it’s face for more than 5 minutes to add a spring to the step. Matthew Fayers competed in the race for the first time and came away with victory and a U20 course record of 15:09. Rob Thompson was a close third with a road 5k PB of 15:41. Martin Bateman V35 (me) was 5th in 16:15 and Chris Ingram completed the top 10 with a PB of 16:59. Carl Yates made a rare appearance and headed a trio of close finishing HAC men in 20th with 17:54, Simon Connell V35 was 22nd in 17:58 and Paul Leppard ran 18:02 for 24th.  Super vet, John Bignell V60 almost matched his age in 62nd with 20:01, Martin Searle V55 was exactly a minute behind with 73rd and Jane Newman FV55 finished 129th in 27:47. 146 finished. This year’s race will take place on Thursday 28th March at 6.45pm at Broadwood Avenue, Ruislip

Please register at the clubhouse by 6.30pm.

You compete entirely at your own risk.

All Club members are welcome to run, £3 fee for any non- member.

Through a combination of Easter being early and British Summer Time being adopted late, the start time of 6.40pm for the Wilkie Mile at Ruislip Lido on Thursday means starting in darkness and make the finish more than a little interesting for the officials!

For this year only, the mile will be moved to Broadwood Avenue, starting and finishing at the roundabout at the junction of Broadwood Avenue, Kings College Road and the entrance to Park Wood.

As the event will be held on the public highway (albeit a quiet one), you are once again reminded that you compete entirely at your own risk.

Important rule change information for Seniors, U20 and U17 athletes

Athletes and coaches should already be aware but this is a reminder of the new competition rule relating to the start of races reports Christine Roy.

As from 1 April 2013 any athlete deemed to be responsible for a false start will be disqualified. Last year this only applied to senior athletes, this year it will apply to both U20 and U17 athletes who would have formerly received a ‘warning’ for a first false start followed by disqualification for a second one.

This will apply to all competitions, apart from school meetings, masters and combined events.

Senior athletes should also note that the rule has been extended to cover open graded meetings which is also a change from last year.

Full rules can be read in the UKA rulebook, pages 31 – 34

British Masters Indoor Championships Lee Valley 9/10th March

Myself, Neil Middleton and Richard Jenkin once again ventured over to Lee Valley for the last of the indoor races this year and to compete against some of the countries top veteran athletes reports Jason Steel.
Neil ran the M45 60m on the saturday and came 4th in his heat and 9th fastest overall in 8.12s, He then ran the 200m on sunday and came 4th in his heat and 9th fastest overall in 27.25s with a tight hamstring hampering his performance.
Richard ran the M50 1500m on Saturday and finished 10th in 451.58s and then ran the 3000m on Sunday and came 7th in 10.35.65s.
I decided not to run in the V40 400m on the Saturday due to illness all week and at the last minute on Sunday chose to race in the 800m and came 6th in 2.14.05s.
All 3 of us are capable of faster times and wanted to do, and could do a bit better but in the circumstances I think we have positives to take away with us which I am sure will stand us in a good position for the rest of the track season.
