Veterans T & F League

HAC hosted the 2nd round of the SCVAC league at Uxbridge on the 10th June.

With the mens team having won the fixture at Battersea, probably to the surprise of everyone, Herne Hill Harriers who are the dominant force in mens veteran athletics, fielded a very strong team to beat us into second place at home despite the valiant efforts of the team.

In the womens league the status quo continued with the Serpentine goliath taking another fixture victory from a battling HAC womens team.

Results are here. Fixture details are here.

Frank Salvat

We recently heard that a previous member of our club passed away. Frank Salvat joined Finchley Harriers as a teenager and  quickly became one of the clubs best runners and greatest  characters. He was a AAA champion at 3 miles and became an  International in 1960 running for Great Britain v France at The White City in  the 5000m. Footage of Frank in action in the AAA at White City can be seen on the Pathe news website here
Later that year he represented GB in The Rome  Olympics also in the 5000m. However he did not qualify for the final, suffering as all  the GB team did for arriving in Rome only shortly before the games, and having  insufficient time to become acclimatized to the very hot  conditions.
Frank was a leading member of the Finchley team  right up to the time he decided to join Portsmouth A.C. where he linked up with  several other top runners like Bruce Tulloh,to give Portsmouth their most  successful period in their history.
But his athletic acheivements are only half the  story,as he was a larger than life character and the many great stories  surrounding him will be told for many years, certainly as long as I am  alive..

Hillingdon Race for Life

The Hillingdon Race for Life is on Sunday 16th June at Hillingdon sports and leisure complex. Last year some of our club members went along and set up a stall to promote the club and also marshalled some of the course. I have been contacted by this year’s organiser to find out if this is something we would be interested in doing again this year. Are there any willing volunteers, as they would love to have us there and it would be a good opportunity to increase the number of women running for the club. If you are interested I will co-ordinate and put you in touch with each other and the organiser. Contact me on davidalan.smith2@gmail.com

Niamh McGuigan u15 ran the 75mh in 11.1 breaking a record that has stood since 1974. Emily Wilcock u13 threw the javelin 19m35 breaking the previous record of 17m38. Ambra Beason also U13 jumped 1m50 breaking the club record of 1m43. Not wanting to be left out the the u15 boys relay team of Louis Southwell, Aidan Bradshaw,D’Shaune McWayne and Sam Fraser won their 4×100 relay in 48.1 breaking a record which has stood since 1978.
Thanks must go to all of the officials and everyone who came down to help us on a very busy but successful day.
