Fraternity & Sorority Cups, Trent Park 29 November 2014

Steph Wigram 222

Hillingdon AC enjoyed a successful day at the Fraternity and Sorority Cups at Trent Park, Cockfosters, with Steph Wigram winning the women’s race and James Laing finishing fourth in the men’s race.

With both the men and women competing together over the same five mile cross country course, Steph made a fast start to distance herself from the rest of the women’s field and slowly increased her winning margin to comfortably secure first place at the end of the race.

James set off with the leaders and was always in the mix for a top three finish, just losing out as Highgate’s Ryan McKinley moved away in the closing stages of the race to claim third.

Philip Warburton backed up his strong performance in the North London Champs the previous week, finishing 17th whilst Gary Horn (62nd), Bob Burton (108th), Paul Martin (128th), Steve Thompson (130th) and Brian Feldman (131st) completed Hillingdon AC’s representation.

Finchley 20 Race Co-ordinator

Unfortunately the current co-ordinator of the Finchley 20 2015 has had to step down from the role. This has created a vacancy for a member to lead a group of people to ensure that the race goes ahead safely and provides participants with an experience that they enjoy ( may be enjoy is not the right word in this context!). As many of you know the Finchley 20 raises a considerable sum towards keeping the club financially healthy. Some of the preparation work has already been carried out, but it would be a big support to the management committee to have someone who can take oversight of the remaining arrangements. Support will be provided to anyone interested in taking on this crucial role. Please contact Dave Smith at davidalan.smith2@gmail.com in the first instance.

The club have been offered, free of charge, a retractable cover for the patio area at the back of the clubhouse. All that is required is a vehicle capable of carrying a 3.5m length, and someone able to help unload it at the club. Our Palace Princesses

Well done to Hannah, Steph and Zoe for representing us at the North London Cross Country Championships at Alexandra Palace on 22nd November reports Donna Nash.
Thankfully the weather was kind and the rain held off – however, the course was incredibly muddy and challenging as ever.
Queen of the course this time for Hillingdon was Hannah Wells, acting team captain. Hannah cut short her visit to Brighton to compete for the club and made it in time for the start line. She ran really well and crossed the finishing line 11 places behind the winner – narrowly missing a spot in the top ten and completing the course in 22.13.
Steph Wigram put in a great performance – despite being unable to dig in deep without spikes! She still made it into the top twenty – placing 18th with a time of 22.32.
Zoe Dobbs said she ‘suffered from race inexperience’ and underestimated the challenge of the hill. All credit to Zoe for taking the time out to compete and complete a challenging course in 54th place, 24th Vet.
87 ladies competed and unfortunately we didn’t qualify as a team as we needed 4 to score.
All of the girls expressed their appreciation for the cheering and encouragement from the men – true team spirit and Hillingdon harmony.

Fair ladies come joint FIRST at Fairlands. Met League Stevenage

Ladies Stevenage

A great turn out of 10 Hillingdon ladies  (and apologies from 8) representing our club on a crisp afternoon reports Donna Nash.

A warm welcome to Helen O’Neile on her first outing for the club and Steph Wigram on her first cross country for Hillingdon. Both put in fantastic performances and proved to be a real asset to the team.

We achieved an amazing result coming joint first with Barnet & District and overall our league position is a strong 3rd.

Well done and thank you to all who took part, giving up their time and putting in a huge effort for our club. Also thanks to our coaches, Roger Williams and Gavin Collett who kick us into shape for these events.

We had 4 ladies finishing in the top 50 and 2 more just outside 100 – places and times as follows.

Eva Mack                             25           23.45

Helen O’Neile                    27           23.57

Steph Wigram                   40           24.27

Hannah Wells                    44           24.30

Jemma Weekes                102         27.45

Andrea Taylor                    113         28.15

And the Vets:

Lesley Conway                  124         28.54

Donna Nash                       128         29.06

Pauline Fischer                  147         29.55

Sharon Talbot                    183         37.40

There was a field of 188 ladies and strong competition with Cambridge. Hannah Wells put in an excellent performance improving her place by 15 from Claybury and Andrea Taylor did incredibly well despite carrying an injury .

And last but not least, a little mention of our training companion – Liam Holbrook, representing Hillingdon in the U17s completed the 4km course in 14.01 just missing a top 10 spot, placing 11.

Metropolitan League Race Two, Stevenage, 08 November 2014

Hillingdon AC’s Senior Men’s A team finished eighth in Division One at the second Metropolitan League fixture of the season at Stevenage whilst the Senior Men’s B team finished fifth in Division Three. This result sees the A team slip from fifth to sixth place in Division One overall while the B team remain second in Division Three after two fixtures.

Rob Thompson was the first finisher for the club in 21st place with James Laing (53rd), Martin Bateman (54th), Daniel Thompson (72nd), Simon Connell (97th) and Edward Campbell (100th) all finishing in the top 100. Mike Dooley finished 122nd in his last race for the club for the immediate future.

Although there were season’s debuts in the Met League for Chris Ingram, Steve Hirons, Pete Warburton, Dave Smith, Gary Horn, Adam Hirst, Nigel Ealand and Paul Martin, with four A team scorers missing from the team that competed at the first Met League fixture, the A team were always going to struggle to replicate their fifth placed finish at Claybury. So it proved as although the A team packed in well to finish ten finishers in the first 166 places, there was then a large gap between the tenth placed finisher for the club, Sam Blanshard and the remaining two A team scorers, Dave Newman and Paul Leppard in 254th and 263rd place.

Steve Hirons was the first scorer for the B team in 274th place with the B team scoring eight completed by Dave Martin in 346th place. There were 442 finishers. Full results may be found here.
