Met League Race Four, Horsenden Hill 16 January 2016

Horsenden Hill

Another strong turnout from Hillingdon AC’s senior men at the fourth Met League fixture of the season in cold and muddy conditions at Horsenden Hill saw the A team finish in fifth place in Division One and the B team finish in second place in Division Three. This result means that the A team have strengthened their position of fifth place overall in Division One, while the B team are now in a very good position to achieve promotion, sitting in second place in Division Three after four of five fixtures.

A Fist Full of FIRSTS

HAC-Winning_team_Horsenden_HillMore good news for the ladies that graced the mud at Horsenden Hill on Saturday reports Donna Nash.
Aside from Stacey Ward’s winning performance, the scoring ‘A’ team comprising Stacey (1st place in 23.10 on her thirty FIRST birthday), Helen O’Neile (21st place in 25.36), Hannah Wells (31st place in 26.35), Eva Mack (39th place in 27.05) and Ciara Williams (55th place in 27.51) secured a FIRST team place and we are currently sitting in 2nd place in division 3.
Our Vets secured a 2nd team spot – Zoe Dobbs (88th in 29.36), Lynn Hyde (111th in 30.29), Karen O’Rourke (124th in 31.34) & Lesley Conway 139th in 32.43 – just 2 points behind the winners and remain in FIRST place in the Vets division 2.
Helen makes her first appearance for cross country this season and made a significant contribution, filling the gap left by an injured Jen Harvey.
Jackie O’Dowd also made her first appearance this season and put in an excellent performance having just returned from injury.
I thought this time we might have had a FIRST and LAST place but Angela Duncan impressed yet again and crossed the finish line in 186th spot out of a field of 187 – almost 3 minutes ahead of the last place lady some 30 years Angela’s junior. Of course, Angela got FIRST V75!
Solid performances also from one of our newest members, Alex Longton (85th on 29.20), and from Kate Shockley (77th in 29.09).
Thanks to everyone that attended, including the remainder of the squad, Melanie Spencer, Lyndsey Browne and Katherine Wells.
We have a FIRST class team with the winning team spirit, second to none AND we have a real chance of ALL of our teams being promoted next season (A team Division 2 to Div 1; B Team Div 3 to Div 2; Vets Dic 2 to Div 1! That would be a FIRST CLASS finish.
All to aim for at Ally Pally! 13th February – no excuses – FULL squad needed!

Women’s MUDdlesex XC Champs 2016

HAC_Wormwood_Jan_2016
Our women at Wormwood this time were Hannah Wells, Ciara Williams, Zoe Dobbs, Kate Shockley, Lynn Hyde, Karen O’Rourke and Melanie Spencer.
Sadly missing due to illness and injury Helen O’Neile, Jen Harvey and Eva Mack who would have made it a super squad to challenge for a trophy but Hillingdon were well represented nonetheless.
Hannah Wells completed the 8km course in 33.50 and secured 10th place and that all important invitation letter to represent the county.
Ciara Williams and Zoe Dobbs both put in fantastic performances; Ciara secured a top 20 place at 19th, 45 seconds behind Hannah in 33.35; Zoe beat her rival Carol Jones from ESM in fine style, finishing in 38th place, 37.43 and just under a minute ahead of Carol.
Our 4th scorer was Kate Shockley, 39th place just 3 seconds behind Zoe in 37.46.
The team came 6th out of 10 clubs.
Our remaining runners all put in good individual performances, Lynn (45th in 38.46), Karen (53rd in 40.39) and Mel (57th in 41.46).
The course was proper heavy sticky mud and thank you to those that tackled the conditions with fantastically good humour, grit and top team spirit. It is wonderful to be part of the HAC xc team – the picture says it all!

Middlesex Cross Country Championships, Wormwood Scrubs, 09 January 2016

Middlesex 2016

Hillingdon AC’s senior men’s team continued their good run of results in the Middlesex Cross Country Championships, finishing second behind a very strong Highgate Harriers to claim silver medals by just a point from third placed team London Heathside at Wormwood Scrubs.

As defending champions, hopes were high that Hillingdon AC may be able to retain the county championship title but Highgate Harriers simply proved too strong on the day as they finished their six scorers within the first 22 places.

Rob Thompson was first scorer for the club in sixth place, Adbi Abdulle was 10th, James Laing 11th, Martin Bateman 19th, Ed Campbell 32nd and Dan Thompson 41st as Hillingdon AC scored 119 points to Highgate’s 74 and London Hearthside’s 120. This result means that Rob, James and Dan have claimed either gold or silver team medals in each of the last four Middlesex Cross Country Championships.

Hillingdon had 22 athletes competing in the Senior Men’s race out of a total field of 179.

Full results may be found here.

Bob Philpott

Bob Philpott passed away just before Christmas and his funeral was held recently at Breakspear Crematorium reports Kevin MCDonald. Bob was a large influence on both me and Tracey during our running careers with Hillingdon AC.
I first met Bob around 1983 when I had just joined Hillingdon AC from Watford Harriers, I had thought about just joining ‘second claim’ but Bob persuaded me that if I was going to join there was no point unless I was able to fully compete for Hillingdon AC, of course he was right. This was typical of Bob, who didn’t beat about the bush. At that stage Bob was managing the Mens Athletics team which had already enjoyed GRE cup success and was now starting to head up the GRE league. Bob’s commitment to the team was total, at this time he had retired as a Fireman and was working in Harrow in the DSS Office.
The mens team around that time included some first class athletes such as John Hillier, Mig La-Rose and Bobs son Martin.
My first HAC race was a Met league at Ruislip, which I ran in a vest borrowed from John Sherrifs son – who had just finished the Junior race! I ran for Bobs team on many occasions over the years and travelled all over the place, from West London to Gateshead. The Gateshead meeting was a GRE cup event and I well remember doing the 10,000m which was hard enough, then Bob got me to do the chase as well!
The thing that sticks in my head is that wherever we went, whether it was a road race, cross country or track, Bob would be there watching. Bob assisted with the management of many of the 12 and 6 stage teams that we ran in. These were always ‘3 Line Whip’ races as far as Bob was concerned. Bob was part of that group of Guys that, for me anyway, included Ted Whitehead, Ted Bamford, Roger Cressy, Dave Holman, who all loved and understood the sport and were HAC during the 80’s.
When I first joined the club, I joined a group coached by Jim Andrews. The group included Martin, Malcolm and Kennedy Robinson, Gary Lavers, Kevin Falvey, Chris Wood and Tracey Glynn (as she was at the time) this group trained at Kings College, and West London on a Sunday. When Jim died Bob decided to take this group on, and we continued to train at West London and Bob was always there whatever the weather.
For both myself and Tracey Bob was the archetypal ‘Club Man’ the sort of person that clubs need to survive and run. Bob was uncompromising and took the HAC Athletic team to Division 2 of the BAL – we may one day get back to that, but this will take another Bob. He will be missed.
