English Schools Championships

The English Schools Championships is the 4th biggest Athletics event held annually in the world and it’s a truly remarkable achievement to qualify especially considering there are 6.8million pupils of secondary school age in England. The event will be broadcast live and the athletes get to perform in a stadium used for international events in front of thousands of spectators against the best athletes in England. The counties of England have all been holding their regional Schools Championships with the purpose of assembling their teams for the ESAA. We have several HAC athletes competing; Aryan Padaruth, Hebe Evans, Juanita Kyere -Aidoo, Lucy Wilcock, Mia Smith, Nana Owusuah Quainoo & Samuel Jagroop. They will be competing in the Manchester Regional Arena on Friday 8th & Saturday 9th July. We wish them lots of luck at this event.

Vets League-match two- Uxbridge

Hillingdon Men’s and Women’s Veteran athletes turned out in force for match 2, our home fixture at Uxbridge on Monday June 13th.
With many great performances on the night the men’s team managed a vital victory overall with a total point score of 175, 16 ahead of nearest rivals and Match 1 winners Herne Hill Harriers. The men had lost the 1st match by 3 points so with 16 points on the night we have a 13-point advantage going into match 3.
The Women’s team followed up their Match 1 victory with another superb display and a win on the night.
Strong in every event the team scored 163 points with 2nd place Serpentine on 125 Points. One more win at Battersea will see the Women claim the division title!
Please help support both teams in the remaining two fixtures, Battersea Monday 27th June and finally Perivale on Wednesday July 13th. The more options we have available really does help Maria and myself cover every event.

Under 20’s South of England Champs

Aryan Padaruth had a great season last year and for 2022 has moved up into the U20’s age category.  The sequence of having a strong year, followed by not such a strong one is normal for our maturing athletes, due to the age classifications.  However Aryan has continued to go from strength to strength even though he is one of the youngest in his age category.

Yesterday 19th June was the U20’s South of England Championship, which was held at the Melbourne Stadium in Chelmsford.  Aryan won!  Fantastic throwing.

In April this year Aryan threw at the YDL Upper fixture, which Hillingdon AC hosted.  He threw a distance of 65.68m, which is a NEW club record.  The previous record being set at the Hayes track in 1990 with a distance of 55.86m from Kelly Smith.

Aryan will be in Manchester next weekend at the Muller UK Champs. You can watch Aryan in action live via the British Athletics website.

Coombe Hill Fell race report

The Coombe Hill Fell Race in Wendover, Bucks is described as a fun, hilly 7km fell run, classified in the BS Category by the Fell Running Association (with a steep climb and descent). A regular club fixture, and this year one of the races in the club summer series, it has the attraction of a £5 race entry fee and a free pint of beer at the Shoulder of Mutton pub afterwards. This years race took place on the 5th June with five Hillingdon AC runners making the trip, the majority of these taking it on for the first time.

A long slow climb through the woods to the car park close to the monument preceded one of the unique features of this race- the very steep downhill. Some light rain beforehand and a thin layer of soil on top of the chalk surface made it very difficult  for the runners to stay on their feet. Sadly some came a cropper with our own Charlie Edwards taking a tumble and having to withdraw from the race. Thankfully a trip to A+E afterwards showed no broken bones.

After the descent a short respite before the steep climb, which can only be walked rather than run up, to the monument. At this point James Laing was in the lead, but as he turned for the long, fast descent to the finish he twisted his ankle and his race was run, leaving a long slow hobble back to the finish.

Dave Smith was now leading the chase for Hillingdon AC and this wily old V50 veteran came safely across the line in 36:06 (46th). He was followed in by V60 Mike Illing in an impressive time of 41:18 (73rd). The only lady was the indomitable Zoe Dobbs who finished in 43:31 (86th). Refreshments were taken at the pub afterwards. Regional schools athletic Championships

It’s that time of year when the regional schools athletics Championships are taking place.

Buckinghamshire Schools Athletics Association held their event 14th & 15th May, we are unaware of any of our athletes competing.

Berkshire Schools Athletics Association held their event on Saturday 11th June at Bracknell track.   We know two of our athletes completed in this.

Keziah Sizya                           U20W             100mH           Silver Medal

Nana Owusuah Quainoo       U17W              100m              Silver Medal

Herefordshire Schools Athletics Association also held their event on Saturday 11th June, at Jarman Park in Hemel Hempstead.  We had a couple of athletes competing.

Hebe Evans                             U15G 100m                          Gold Medal

                                                U15G 200m                          Gold Medal

Congratulations to all our athletes who were able to showcase their skills in these competitions.  We wish all, and there will be several, who compete this weekend coming 18th June in the Middlesex Schools Athletics Championship.

These regional competitions are important as they pave the way for our young athletes to potentially participate in the prestigious English Schools Competition next month.
