Hillingdon wins first Southern League match
Hillingdon AC athletes dominated the first match of the summer season at Uxbridge on Saturday in the Southern Athletic League (Division 2 North) to win with 200 points, ahead of London Heathside (182), Barnet (136) and St Alban’s (111).
The club gained 32 first places on track and field right through the day, with doubles, ie Hillingdon A and B string winners, in the women’s 100m and 800m, men’s hammer and javelin, and women’s high jump, triple jump, javelin and hammer – all this despite the unseasonably cool weather and a burst of local hailstones.
Of the women, it is difficult to say who was most impressive but certainly Nicola Tikare looked effortless at the start winning her 100m and 200m sprints, 12.4 secs and 22.6 respectively, and the high jump in 1.3 metres. Rachel Blackburn swept the board in field events with wins in triple jump, high jump, and javelin while also winning 400 m hurdles. It was also good to see the return of Michaela Hutchison and Eva Mack to middle distance competition with their wins in the 800m and 400m.
In the men’s events, Robert Thompson was a double winner in the 5000m (15:27.5) and the 2000m steeplechase (6:26.1). Alan Davidson had the unusual experience of sharing his winning times – of 11.4 secs in the 100m, the same as teammate Patrick Onu but in a different race, and in the 200m in a dead heat but placed first in a time of 22.6 secs.
However without the hard work of officials Suzanne Kendall and Sue Bishop we would enjoy none of this success! Thanks to them once again for making it all happen.
