June 5K Training Race
This Thursday (14th June) sees the third of the six 5K Training Races of the summer. However, for the first time this race sees the inclusion of the “Gosunder”, one of the most historic and prestigious Club race in the calendar.
This means that, for this month only, the 5K Training Race will be a Yacht Handicap, which basically means that the slowest runner/walker will start first and the quickest last, and in an ideal world (well, perhaps not for the officials) everyone will finish together. The first one across the line will hold the Gosunder Trophy for a year, on the proviso that a realistic handicap is able to be set i.e. finished a Training Race in the last couple of years or featured during the cross country/road season just finished. Now that’s something to go potty about!
Because of the potential closeness of runners at the finish, for this month only the finish will move to Boston Grove, so on the last lap competitors will, instead of proceeding down the hill past the clubhouse to the finish, turn left into St Catherines Road then, when this road turns ninety degrees to the right, go straight on into Boston Grove to the finish.
To maintain the 5K distance, this necessitates the start being moved this month only to outside the shops in Howletts Lane.
Registration is at the clubhouse by 6.30pm with the first competitor starting at 6.40pm. Entrance is free to Club members, £3 to guests.
