Met League Wormwood Scrubs- Senior men’s report
With 27 finishers in the men’s Met League race at Wormwood Scrubs, this was our third biggest turnout of the season on a course that had been billed as very wet and very muddy. In the event, the conditions were not too bad and saw strong performances for the club with the A team finishing seventh on the day in Division One (now seventh overall in the league) and the B and C teams finishing fifth and 18th in Division Three – equaling the best performance for the B team this season with the B and C teams in sixth and 18th overall in Division Three.
Rob Thompson was first scorer for the club in seventh, as he regained form following illness over the Christmas period with Aramias Zeration 31st (as he continues to recover from being ill) and James Laing 40th. Will Fielding marked his Met League debut for the season in 80th as he was rewarded for his journey up from Devon to compete with a fine performance. Martin Bateman showed what he can do when he wears two cross country spikes in 85th (and 3rd vet 45), with Kirk O’Rourke in 87th and Abdirahman Hamud just outside the top 100 in 104th.
Dan Thompson had an improved performance compared with the Middlesex Champs in 121st, Charlie Edwards was 147th and Jon Hicks 212th. Scott Farley marked his return following injury in 233rd with the scoring 12 for the A team completed by Jose Ramon Polo Lopez (255th), who lost time (and for a period his glasses) after slipping and falling in the muddy conditions.
The B team was book-ended by Steve Hirons in 264th and Chris Marchand in 362nd and featured a cross country debut for Spencer Harding in 274th and a return from injury for Andy Wood (289th) with Iain Betson first scorer for the C team in 383rd and Dennis Carey the final scorer for the club in 421st.
